There is no red ring around the barrel, but this is a fantastic lens from the era of film photography. It's fast with a maximum aperture of f/2, and therefore good in low light. The depth of field is very shallow, which is useful for isolating your subject against the background. The bokeh is smooth and pleasant looking, with no weird artefacts. Previously, I changed the Li-Ion battery in my 70mai Pro Dash Cam. It was quite easy. The 70mai A800S in my wife's car now needs replacing and I was expecting the replacement procedure to be similar. Looking at the market in the past years, I noticed there are a lot of solutions for scanning with a DSLR. Not contesting the quality of either, I personally chose to go with DSLR scanning vs a regular scanner simply because I can store everything absolutely flat. You mentioned a light-box of some sorts, which you do need when using a DSLR, but the size is incomparable to a regulat scanner. For mounting the camera I use my tripod, which it sits on, anyway. And all that's left is a mask to hold the negative in place. I can agree with the fact that it does take a bit to set-up the first 2-3 times, compared to a scanner, which is almost ready to go as soon as you take it out of the box, but the time diminishes considerably after you figure out the correct settings. Also, creating actions for the regular conversions is something that helps speed up processing when transferring images into the computer. Overall, it doesn't seem such a huge time saver to use a scanner, even space seems to be something that would be more cumbersome with a scanner than anything else.

      @adriancozma6102 That’s fine, we all have our own preferences and can do what we like! The scanner option works better for me. Thanks for your thoughts.

    If I wanted perfectly sharp images I would shoot my digital cameras and not film in the first place. I use mine to scan old 35mm negatives and my medium format film negatives as well as a picture scanner. I have salvaged so many images that would otherwise sit in a photo book since the 60s and can share the digital images with the whole family. It's perfectly sharp, as long as you know how to use it.

    Lovely review, just one correction, you said the light entering via the eyepiece could get onto the film. Of course you know that is incorrect, it can get onto the meter cell and cause an incorrect exposure. When the shutter curtains are open the light entering from the eyepiece would be blocked by the mirror. I am not suggesting you did not know this, but the correction is necessary for people viewing your video, which otherwise is very informative. The A1 is an excellent camera, not my favourite but definitely a very good camera all the same. Yes I have actually used one and taken some good photos with it.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet 10 днів тому

      @roidnerd2501 They're designed this way. With batteries that are already charged, the chargers that show a percentage will show a high percentage. When the charge cycle has finished with already charged batteries, the amount of charge put into the batteries will be low. The chargers measure capacity on the discharge cycle. If you forgot to record the capacity, you will need to do an analyse cycle. This will charge the battery to full, discharge to completely empty and measure the capacity, then charge to full again. I don't think you have a faulty unit.

    just stumbled over your channel, browsing Epson V600 stuff of which I have one on order for. Tasked with much the same as you, digitalising the family archives which spans pictures from about 1890 to this day. I have been postponing the task for years and dabbed a bit with camera digitalising but with the hoard of paper copies, I have been somewhat overwhelmed. Found the Epson FF-680W last week and bought one of those, and it made short order of most of the paper copies in just a couple of days, at 600 DPI/tiff format choice and it also has a rather nifty inbuilt colour correction mode, making two copies of the original. It gobbles up a stack of less than 50 4x6" paper copies in at about seconds pr paper copy and i have set it up to produce two copies, one identical to the paper copy, and one copy which is autocorrected. Getting FF-680w was probably as close to a miracle as I will ever be. The V600 is to take the pre 1930s stuff which is largely cardboard mounted, slides, 120, and other odds and ends, as well as possibly other odd jobs in there. Your videos are a very nice take on the archiving bits, doing it good enough but not over the top and a rather refreshing take on the scanning side of photography!

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet 11 днів тому

      @JensMHA Thanks for your comment and for making me aware of the Epson FF-680W. I just watched Keith Cooper's video about it, and what a fabulous little scanner if you have lots of prints. It's incredibly fast, and having the automatic feed is so much better. Doing this task on a regular flatbed scanner would take forever. I bought an Epson printer last year, and I'm now a big Epson fan. Their products are well thought out and well made. My task was to scan in negatives, so even if the FF-680W had been around previously, it would have been no use. Thanks again for the heads-up about this scanner, and good luck with your remaining scanning using the V600. It won't be quite as simple, and it will require more intervention, but positive slides, 35mm and 120 negatives won't be an issue. When my Dad died last year and I inherited the family photo archives to scab, it was basically the same kind of thing.

    I bought one of these a week ago. I'm having a terrible time with infinity focus. I'm using a Pholsy FD to RF adaptor. I used both F8 Nd F16 Zone Focusing. I had no luck. Even with focus peaking the distant objects were not in focus. I even tried focusing directly to infinity using focus peaking. These are also out of focus even though they show the red halo on distant objects. I'm I doing something wrong? Or is this simply an issue with the lense I bought?

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet 28 днів тому

      @astrodoug I don't know. Not being able to focus to infinity was the problem using FD lenses with SLR and DSLR cameras, but that problem went away with mirrorless cameras. I have no experience of EOS-R, just EOS-M. Neither do I have any experience with the Pholsy adaptor. Do other FD lenses focus to infinity with your adaptor? The 28mm lens has a very deep depth of field, and I've not had any problems with focusing. It could be your lens or maybe the adaptor, but more likely the lens if other lenses work OK with the adaptor. Good luck. I know how frustrating focusing problems can be from experience with other lenses in the past.

    This lens suitable for football photography?

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet Місяць тому

      My son plays football, and I take quite a lot of photos of him playing. I have never considered using my 400mm lens. When he plays indoors, I use my EF 85mm f/1.8, and outdoors, I use my EF 70-200mm f/4L IS. I use a Canon EOS M6 Mark 2, which has an APS-C sensor. I use both a standard Canon adapter and also a Viltrox speedbooster. The speedbooster reduces the focal length by x0.71 but gives me an extra stop of light, which is very useful indoors. For the football shots I do (especially using a crop sensor camera), the 400mm lens is just too long. It would be very difficult to keep fast-moving action within the frame. It's also a bit slow, especially indoors. In my personal experience, lenses for football don't need to be any longer than 200mm, and speed is important. A lens I've considered buying for this is the EF 135 mm f/2L. An f/2.8 70-200mm would also be good. These are just my personal opinions based on taking photos of my son playing football. Other people's experience may vary. It also depends on what kind of football. When my son plays, I watch from the touchline, and I'm very close. If you are taking photos of professional football and you are in the stands a long way from the pitch, then yes, a longer lens will be better because of the extra reach.

      @@PhilUKNet I went with the Canon version. 2 small annoying things that you need to accept the message when the camera wakes and manually remove fringing since Canon refuse to support it (even though the meta data knows it’s adapted with their own 0.71)). @mvp_kryptonite Thanks for the info. I'm in no hurry to move to EOS R, and the rolling shutter seems to be the biggest criticism with the R7. Hopefully, that will be fixed or improved with a Mark 2 version. To be honest, I'd be happy sticking with EOS M, but Canon have now abandoned that system.

    I guess this is interesting and it's fun to see that this FD lens can still get pretty good image quality. Maybe one of the mirrorless camera's with build in image stabilizer on the sensor can improve this FD lens a bit. But for a cheap alternative to this Canon EF L lens in this video I can probably recommend the Canon EF 70-210 F4 lens. That one is probably a lens with a slightly improved version of the optics from the FD lens in this video. And because it has some basic auto focus inside you usually get sharp and good images with less effort than the FD version. I guess a second hand version of that older EF lens will be 1/5 or 1/6 the price of this newer 70-200mm ef lens with technically only loosing the image stabilization and only a minimal amount of image quality. So that one is really good to buy for cheap

      That's right. On the latest IBIS bodies, these old lenses should be pretty good - provided your eyesight is still good enough for focusing manually! I owned the EF 70-210mm f/4L before I got the IS version. As you say, the optics are very good. However, when I moved to the new version, I found the IS really useful. I've seen these advertised used for very low prices and they are great bargains. Thanks for your comment!

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet Місяць тому

      Hello Beth. I've only ever seen this error after messing around with the stop-down lever. If you push in the stop-down lever then release it without taking a shot, it can cause this error. To clear it, push the film advance lever into its fully retracted position. Underneath is the multiple exposure lever. Push this to the left, and then advance the film lever. This will cock the shutter without advancing the film, and it should clear the error condition. If it doesn't, then maybe you have a fault with the camera or the lens which will need fixing. Good luck!

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet Місяць тому

      The camera uses 135 film, more commonly known as 35mm. This is very common, and even now, it is still easily available. Next, think about the ISO value you want. Lower numbers (100) are less sensitive to light but are less less grainy and provide more detail. High numbers (400/800/1600) are more sensitive, thus better for low light, but grainier. If you're shooting outside on bright days, 100 or 200 will be fine. Your next decision is colour or B/W. After that, there are many different brands and film stocks. It's just personal preference. Kodak Portra, I find, is really good for skin tones. Just experiment and find something you like. A roll of 35mm film normally has 36 frames, but you can also find film with 18 or 24 frames. Hope this helps!

I just had my T90 CLA'ed and wanted to test it, so went out to do some street photography with an FD 135mm f/2 and the 300TL. You can see the results on my latest video. I just set everything on Auto, including the 300TL, and the TTL did a great job managing the flash exposure. When I'm out taking photos, I just think about getting the shot and I don't want to worry about camera and flash settings. That's the beauty of the P setting on the 300TL and it works well!

    With the powerex, did you use the analyze mode or did you discharge and charge manually? If you did it manually, the charge will report mah put into the battery, which with nimh 65% (or worse) charge efficiency will correctly report a much higher number than the battery capacity. Analyze mode should report the actual battery capacity, not the power used to charge the battery.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet 2 місяці тому

      Mostly, I use analyse mode or charge mode. When batteries are charging, I couldn't work out why the mAh was so high compared to the rated capacity. As you say, it's efficiency. This reading is what the charger puts out, not what the battery accepts. Analyse mode, I believe, measures the battery capacity on the discharge cycle. It's been a bit of a learning curve, but I've learnt more from comments. Thanks for adding to my knowledge!

    Enjoyed this content Phil (even though it’s 4 years old!)….considering buying this lens to pair with a Canon 40D. The additional information about the use of extension tubes was especially helpful and as an inexperienced photogrpaher, it wasn’t something I’d thought about👍

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet 2 місяці тому

      Thank you! I used a 40D for several years and loved it. The extension tubes are just a way of reducing the minimum focusing distance. This lens is so sharp that you can get decent macro shots with an extension tube. However, it won't work with a 1.4x or 2x extender. I've actually been using this lens a lot recently to get shots of my lad playing football. I've been using a Viltrox speed booster and Canon EOS M6 Mk2. The speed booster gives me another stop of light, so in poorly lit indoor pitches I can use an aperture of f/1.2 with the 85mm f/1.8. This means I can use fairly fast shutter speeds at reasonable ISO levels and freeze the action. For the money, it's a great lens for portraits, macro and action!

My T90 also started playing up with the shutter problems that T90s are famous for. I sent it to Steve Sweringen in the US, who is considered something of an expert on these cameras, and it's currently on its way back after being CLA'ed. These cameras were magnificent in their day, but they're all getting very old now. A1s are well over 40 years old, and the cloth shutters only last so long.
